Crush Injuries and Acute Trauma: The Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen

A severe crush injury — from a fall, a vehicle collision, or a workplace accident — does damage beyond the obvious. The swelling that follows can squeeze blood vessels shut, cutting off oxygen to muscle and tissue that could otherwise be saved. Used early, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a recognized adjunct in managing these injuries.

The problem: swelling and oxygen starvation

When tissue is crushed, inflammation and swelling raise the pressure inside the limb. That pressure compresses small vessels, and the tissue downstream begins to die from lack of oxygen — a cycle that can lead to repeated surgery or even amputation.

How HBOT interrupts the cycle

At therapeutic pressure on 100% oxygen, plasma delivers oxygen even where circulation is impaired. HBOT reduces swelling, supports the survival of marginal tissue, and lowers the risk of complications — which is why it is used alongside surgery and standard trauma care for severe crush injuries and acute traumatic ischemia.
